 FINAT Seminar 20-22 November 2024

"Narrow web 4.0. -
The future of the Narrow web industry from
a technical and sustainable viewpoint"

CALL FOR PAPERS

Is conventional printing a thing of the past? Will digital or hybrid become the dominant printing technique in the future?

What’s in store for us in the years to come?

The label industry is continually evolving and innovating but how will digitization, automation, AI, disruptive trends, other industrial processes, customer requirements, price-increases, shortages in raw materials and personnel, and above all environmental legislation affect the way that we produce labels and packaging?

The one-and-a-half day seminar is designed to inform companies about:

- the latest developments in the regulatory arena;

- new substrates/media for, techniques, methodologies and best practices in printing and converting

- how to be(come) and stay compliant with environmental rules

thus turning the many challenges the industry is facing into opportunities for growth and profitability.

Papers presented should show from a technical standpoint new features along the supply chain that will improve printing, converting, and processing whilst at the same time also taking into account and resolving sustainability issues.

Please send your abstracts to the FINAT secretariat (jvhaeringen@lejeune.nl) before 7 November. Thank you.

Labelexpo founder Clive Smith passes away

On 18 September last, the Tarsus Labels Group announced the death of Clive Smith, founder of Labelexpo.

Clive Smith launched the first Labelex show in London in 1980 to showcase coding, marking and labelling technology for the garment and wider package and product labelling industries. The show was sponsored by Mike Fairley’s Labels & Labeling magazine published by his Cowise group, a partnership which was to endure throughout the show’s history.

In 1985, Smith moved the show to Europe, running at the Rogier Centre in Brussels. FINAT sponsored the seminar programme for the first time, and this was later followed by an agreement to exclusively partner with the European show.  >>

Microplastics REACH restrictions to enter into force

The REACH restriction on intentionally added microplastics in products was adopted on 25 September when it was published in the Official Journal and will into force on 17 October 2023. The restriction covers all synthetic polymer particles below five millimetres that are organic, insoluble and resist degradation. Products used at industrial sites or not releasing microplastics during use are derogated from the sale ban, but their manufacturers will have to provide instructions on how to use and dispose of the product to prevent microplastics emissions.

JRC Study on Reuse scenarios

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) presented preliminary results on a study aimed at assessing the comparative environmental impacts of reusable vs. single-use packaging in the food and beverages sector. The results on 4 scenarios indicate a lower environmental impact of the reusable packaging under certain conditions. Among the scenarios evaluated, clear benefits of a multiple-use system for glass wine bottles were seen even when using a thicker, heavier bottle. A final report is expected to be released in November 2023.
